How Does Divorce Affect Children?

I am often told by parents, who are contemplating or in the process of divorce, that their children know nothing about the marital disputes. One person adamantly denied that the children were aware of the marital difficulties -- until discovering that the children disclosed knowledge about it to the Guardian ad Litem (a court-appointed investigator).
